Ubuntu Display, Scaling, and Multiple Monitor Settings

Adjust Ubuntu resolution, scaling, refresh rate, orientation, Night Light, and multiple-monitor arrangement with a safe way back if the screen becomes unusable.

Display settings change how Ubuntu sends an image to a screen. They do not make the physical panel gain detail or speed it does not support.

Open Settings → Displays. When several screens are connected, select the screen you intend to adjust before changing a value.

Resolution controls the image grid

Resolution is the number of pixels used to draw the desktop, such as 1920 by 1080. A display normally looks sharpest at its native, or designed, resolution.

If text and icons look fuzzy, check resolution before changing many unrelated controls. Do not copy a resolution from someone else’s monitor; choose from values Ubuntu reports for yours.

Scale controls apparent size

Scale makes interface elements appear larger or smaller without asking you to sit closer to the screen.

A higher scale makes text and controls larger but leaves less working space. Choose a value that keeps controls readable. Fractional scaling, when offered, provides steps between whole values; its availability and behavior can depend on the graphics setup.

Scale is different from browser zoom. Browser zoom changes one web page; display scale changes the desktop and applications more broadly.

Refresh rate controls update frequency

Refresh rate describes how many times per second the display can update. Ubuntu only offers rates it believes the display and connection support.

Do not select a number because it is larger. Use a supported rate that produces a stable image. Adapters, cables, resolution, and the monitor can limit the available choices.

Orientation rotates the desktop

Orientation supports normal landscape, portrait, and rotated installations. Match the setting to how the physical screen is mounted.

An accidental rotation can make pointer movement confusing. Wait for the confirmation timeout instead of trying to navigate blindly.

Arrange more than one monitor

The diagram in Displays represents the physical arrangement. Drag the screen rectangles so their left, right, and vertical positions match the real monitors.

Why it matters: the pointer crosses between screens at the edges shown in the diagram. If the arrangement is reversed, the pointer seems to leave in the wrong direction.

Choose the display mode based on the task:

  • Join Displays creates one extended desktop across screens.
  • Mirror shows the same content on both screens.
  • Turning one display off uses only the other screen.

The primary display carries key desktop elements such as the top bar and main overview. Select it deliberately rather than assuming the laptop panel must be primary.

Mirroring can change sharpness

Two monitors can have different native resolutions. Mirror mode must choose a shared arrangement, so one or both may appear less sharp.

Join Displays lets each screen use its own suitable resolution. Mirroring is still useful for presentations when identical content matters more than maximum workspace.

Use Night Light when it helps

Night Light shifts the display toward warmer colors according to a schedule or manual setting. It can reduce blue-toned light; it does not lower every display’s physical brightness or guarantee better sleep.

Color-sensitive work may look inaccurate while it is active. Turn it off temporarily when judging exact colors.

If the external display is missing

  1. Confirm the monitor has power and the correct input selected.
  2. Reseat the cable at both ends.
  3. Check whether Displays shows the monitor but has it disabled.
  4. Try a known-working cable or port when available.
  5. Avoid repeatedly changing resolution before Ubuntu detects the screen.

Docking stations, graphics drivers, and adapters can add hardware-specific issues. Record the computer, graphics device, adapter, and monitor model before asking for help.

Common mistakes

Changing scale to fix blur. First verify native resolution; scale mainly changes size.

Arranging the diagram unlike the desk. Drag the rectangles to match the physical left/right layout.

Confirming a black or distorted result. Wait for automatic reversion.

Mirroring displays with different shapes and expecting both to be perfect. Use Join Displays when independent resolution matters.

Using Night Light while checking precise colors. Disable it for that task, then restore the schedule.
